AI Innovator Spotlight: Neural Labs

An interview with Neural Labs Founder and CEO, Tom Kinyanjui.

Neural Labs

Tell us about your innovation. What is the problem? What solution are you offering? What populations are you serving?

Neural Labs Africa is a startup that aims to address the challenges of inadequate healthcare resources and the burden of diseases in Africa through the use of technology (i.e. machine learning & deep learning) in medical imaging diagnosis. Our AI solution utilises cutting-edge technology to screen medical images, such as X-rays for common indicators of tuberculosis (TB), pneumonia, as well as lung cancer in real-time, providing timely and accurate results to radiologists and hospitals.

Our technology is specifically designed to address the prevalent diseases in Africa, especially marginalised communities with a focus on respiratory and cancerous diseases, which are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the region. By focusing on these diseases, we aim to have a direct impact on improving patient care and outcomes in Africa, particularly in marginalised communities where access to healthcare services may be limited.

What is a recent example of progress? What is Neural Labs currently celebrating?

Recently, Neural Labs Africa participated in BRAIN (Bridging Research and Innovation) which seeks to foster deep tech solutions in Africa co-designed by Open Startup and Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship at MIT.

What are the primary challenges you are currently facing?

  • Limited Access to Training Data

Machine learning models, particularly deep learning models used for image analysis, require vast amounts of data to train effectively. In the context of medical imaging, these datasets need to be of high quality and should represent a diverse set of medical conditions.

Implications: Without sufficient data, AI models may underperform or produce misleading results. Additionally, they may struggle with edge cases or uncommon conditions which can be crucial in a medical context.

  • Inadequate Access to Trained Medical Image Annotators

Properly annotating medical images for AI training requires a combination of medical knowledge and technical expertise. Radiologists or other experts are essential for this task.

Implications: Without expert annotation, training data may have inaccuracies. This can lead to AI models that make incorrect predictions, which could have dire consequences in medical applications

  • Luddite Attitude Towards AI in Image Screening

A "luddite" attitude refers to skepticism or even outright opposition to new technologies. Some medical professionals or the general public might distrust AI's role in healthcare.

Implications: This can slow the adoption of AI-enhanced medical procedures, making it difficult to integrate AI solutions into standard medical practice.

What is a lesson you have learned that might help other innovators on their journey?

As a founder, I've realised the paramount importance of unwavering persistence in championing revolutionary technologies like AI to transform healthcare. It's not just about the adoption of new tools, but a commitment to a vision that promises improved patient outcomes and more efficient healthcare processes. Staying focused on this mission, even in the face of skepticism or challenges, is crucial. Moreover, forging collaborations with industry leaders is not merely a strategy—it's a necessity. These alliances amplify our capacity, infusing our initiatives with their expertise, resources, and influence, ultimately accelerating the journey towards true innovation.

How has Villgro and the AI4H program impacted Neural Labs' growth?

Joining Villgro Africa's AI4H program has been transformative for Neural Labs Africa. Beyond the invaluable financial support, Villgro has acted as a catalyst for our growth, providing consistent acceleration through weekly one-on-ones that have enabled us to refine both our business strategy and technological approach. Their deep expertise in the healthcare sector has offered us guidance that is both insightful and pragmatic, paving the way for Neural Labs Africa to thrive in the complex healthcare landscape.
